EndoGlia was born in 2026 from a simple idea: to bring together researchers who are exploring the connections between hormones, glial biology, and brain health. Hosted by the Barreto Lab at the University of Limerick, the series aims to create a space for researchers at different career stages and from different disciplines to share ideas, approaches, and perspectives. Through a series of invited talks, EndoGlia brings together scientists working across endocrinology, neuroscience, glial biology, ageing, and neurodegeneration. More than a seminar series, EndoGlia is an opportunity to connect fields that are often studied separately, encourage new collaborations, and explore the questions that emerge at their intersection. We hope to build a growing community of researchers interested in understanding how hormonal and cellular environments influence the brain, and how bringing these perspectives together can open new directions for research.

EndoGlia is organized by the Barreto Lab at the University of Limerick, whose research focuses on the interplay between endocrine signaling and glial cell biology in the aging and neurodegenerating brain.
Principal Investigator
Our Principal Investigator, George Barreto, is Professor of Cell Biology and Immunology at the University of Limerick, where he also serves as Assistant Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Science & Engineering. He completed his PhD in Neuroscience at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, investigating the effects of neurosteroids on reactive glia following traumatic brain injury. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral training at Stanford University School of Medicine, where his research focused on astrocyte activation following stroke and on understanding how astrocytic function can be harnessed to protect neurons. George joined the University of Limerick in 2019, where he contributes to teaching across the B.Sc. in Bioscience and M.Sc. in Biomolecular Science. His research spans neurobiology, neuroimmunology, and neuropharmacology, with a particular interest in the role of glial cells in brain injury, neurodegeneration, and brain health.
